Sea and Blue Economy

In the context of the Sea and Blue Economy, SEAPOWER proposes to develop a series of services and products for several sectors of the Blue Economy, namely:

  • Science and Innovation
  • Fisheries, Aquaculture, Processing and Trading
  • Robotics and Digital Technologies
  • Ocean Renewable Energy
  • Ports, Maritime Transport, Logistics and Communications
  • Shipyards, Shipbuilding, and Ship Repair

National Strategy for the Sea (ENM 2030) and SEAPOWER's Strategic Objectives:

SG1

Fight Climate Change and Pollution and Protect and Restore Ecosystems

SG3

Decarbonise the Economy and Promote Renewable Energies and Energy Autonomy

SG7

Stimulate Scientific Knowledge, Technological Development and Blue Innovation

SG9

Incentivize Reindustrialization and Productive Capacity and Sea Digitalization

SG10

Ensure Safety, Sovereignty, Cooperation and Governance

Case Studies

The sector recognizes e-Methanol as one of the main fuels for decarbonizing the maritime transport sector.

Development of autonomous vessels, advanced sensors, automation technology, medium and micro-AUVs for underwater exploration and UXO detection.

Systems that collect data in real time, allowing continuous monitoring of the ship's performance and condition, facilitating early detection of faults or the need for maintenance. They also make it possible to simulate different operating scenarios, allowing for better decision-making and performance optimization.

Development of technology for monitoring and digitizing port activity, port decarbonization and ship electrification.

Development of technology for the construction of HDPE boats.

The supply of shore power to ships is an innovative solution that is gaining prominence in the maritime sector. This system allows ships to connect to land-based power sources while docked in ports, instead of keeping engines or generators running to produce energy.

Expected objectives

The NEXUS Agenda will create an ecosystem of 28 products and services for the Green and Digital Transition in the transport and logistics sectors. At the heart of this ecosystem, the core product, is the NEXUS OPEN DATA COLLABORATION PLATFORM, comprising a set of applications and services (NEXUS FEDERATED APPLICATIONS AND SERVICES). Finally, the NEXUS HARWARE ASSETS component comprises innovative hardware products that exploit IoT principles and promote important synergies between the collaborative open data platform and other applications and services. Each of these products will have its own digital representation (Digital Twin), aimed at sharing and receiving data to improve the performance of operations.

Cross-cutting projects

Base Financing - Technology and Innovation Center (CTI)

The main operational objectives (OP) of the CTI project are:

OP1. Contribute to greater coordination between the institutions of the scientific and technological system and the business community in order to improve production processes and increase the production of knowledge-based products and services.

OP2. Promote increased technology transfer to companies.

OP3. Promote access to specific training programs for companies in the Sea and Blue Economy sector, namely Ocean Engineering and Technology.

OP4. Providing services and technical advice to companies.

OP5. Boosting installed capacity in the region.

OP6. Contribute to increasing the number of companies that:

  • interact with the research and innovation (R&I) system;
  • participate in European programs and international partnerships;
  • promote qualified employment;
  • The main objective of private investment in R&I is to deepen the effort to expand and consolidate the network of interface institutions between the academic, scientific and technological system and the Portuguese business fabric, guaranteeing the necessary support to boost their impact in promoting investment in R&D and innovative investment in companies, particularly in terms of their export potential.

Lines of Action

  • New technologies associated with naval and offshore projects
  • Development of the sensing methodology and corresponding application environment;
  • Development of digital twin methodology for boats and ships;
  • Development of digital transformation solutions for the ports sector and multimodal operations;
  • Ocean sensing;
  • Development and production of new green fuels.

Expected results

With this project, SEAPOWER aims to support the growth trend and the challenges and opportunities of the blue economy sector in Portugal and worldwide, with a strong focus on internationalization.

Funding

The CTI project is supported by the core funding component of the Technology and Innovation Center (CTI), under the terms of Call for Tenders (AAC) No. 03/C05-i02 /2022, within the scope of the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Program (PRR).
